A fluency exercise with extended chord arpeggios including step-by-step practice routine.
In this exercise we'll create funky bass riffs using chord arpeggios. We use extended arpeggios up to the tenth (the octave of the third). The 16th runs are pretty fast at the tempo of 90bpm, so it's important to work on fluency and accuracy.
In the second half of the video you can see my suggestion for a practice routine. In order to be able to play fast passages fluently and without mistakes, it is advisable to practice the movement of the fingers as precisely as possible at a slower tempo. I initially reduced the practice tempo to 75bpm and play with a corresponding drum track. The decisive factor in playing fast passages fluently is the accuracy of the individual finger movements. For this reason, I first play through each lick a few times at half the speed of the exercise. This gives me the opportunity to keep track of my fingers movements closely and enhance and correct any inaccuracies. A well-chosen fingering is very important upfront. Then I play the passage at the full tempo of the practice track to test if the accuracy is good enough. If I make a lot of mistakes or can’t keep up with the pace of the practice track, I go back to half the speed and optimize the finger movements again. After several slow-fast cycles, you'll find that your playing gets better and better at the fast tempo.
In the next step, I try to play the individual bars one after the other to a slowed down play-along track (75bpm). There may be individual bars that don't work so well. These can be practiced with the slow-fast cycles again.
Next, I try to hit the target tempo (90bpm). To do this, I use the same practice routine with a drum track at the target tempo and play again in slow-fast cycles.
This way you can practice fast fluent licks very efficiently!
