James Brown Band had 2 drummers at the same time playing, Jabo Starks and Clyde Stubblefield. Clyde was an innovator of the Funk drum rhythms. In Nov. 1969 James Brown recorded Funky Drummer in a recording studio. Part 1 and Part 2 single records released in 1970. The story goes Clyde Stubblefield was making up a groovy drum beat and the Band started to ad lib too. James came in and liked it so much that they recorded it and James made up the words. Album: In the Jungle Groove. It included Funky Drummer (full length) Remastered (1986) and Expanded (2003). In 1965 Clyde joined the Band for about 6 years. He taught himself how to play the drums when he was young and never knew how to read sheet music. When he was 69 and giving a Clinic in Madison Wisconsin. An audience member asked him to play a little of "Funky Drummer". Clyde said over time he hated that beat and honestly forgot how it goes. Funky Drummer song made him famous and for that he is grateful. He said he would go home and listen to it. He talked about the pleasure of playing the drums and making up his own beats. He never listened to anybody telling him how or what to play to a song. He played what he felt was right. He just wanted to be happy and it wasn't about the money. He said he didn't get rich playing for James Brown. He told a story of how happy he was when James Brown Band played at the NY Apollo Theater until he was told they were playing 6 shows a day and on Saturday 7 shows. He was hoping the crowds outside the Theater would get tired of waiting and go home. Also he loved all the different City's and Country's they played in. He was in many bands. He finally bought a house in Madison Wisconsin where he met his wife to be. Very nice man. He passed away at 73 years old. Some of the facts on the internet about musicians and bands are wrong.
