Learn Some Funky Exotic Drum Beats

In this free drum lesson, I’ll teach some funky drum grooves using Gary Leach’s new drum book Beats Exotique. This book is open-ended and allows you to combine cymbal/bell patterns from a wide range of countries with backbeat oriented rock and pop kick patterns. This creates some interesting cross-cultural, hybrid grooves that will challenge your ears while educating you about beats used around the world.

In this video, I’ll first play the cymbal part, then I’ll systematically add one limb at a time. Once I’ve added the bass drum, I’ll rotate between three different grooves using the same bell pattern, playing first a simple rock beat, then a tumbao/baoin, and finally a samba kick pattern.
