I just had to get this out there after Rick Springfield who played Dr Noah Drake "paging him to ICU to treat a case of heartbreak". General Hospital" premiered on ABC on April Fool's Day 1963 as a half hour afternoon TV program. In 1978 it was expanded to an hour long that allowed for more and better storylines. The following year, the character of Luke Spencer was introduced and Laura Webber became the object of his affections. Along the way, Herb Alpert's "Rise" was heard during the broadcast and that helped propel that song to #1 on the charts. The ratings exploded and the soap became the most watched ever, with their 1981 wedding episode setting a record for daytime viewership. Guest stars galore and all kinds of action drama kept the soap alive just when it seemed ready to die off and then on the radio came this rap talk tune that laid out the scene of the soap by a studio group called Afternoon Delights, a Boston based vocal studio quartet, including Rebecca Hall, Janet Powell, Robalee Barnes, and Suzanne Boucher. Decidedly a novelty tune, it had a percolating funk feel playing under the rapped lyrics that outlined every current plot and character that helped a lot of people catch up on just what was going on the soap. It peaked at #33 pop and #23 R&B. As such, the group fell apart after the ill received EP that contained the hit and was dead in the water upon release. However, the song was resurrected in 2013 for the "General Hospital" 50th Anniversary show on April 28. I thought it might be fun to put this out there again.
