Here is another classic that I have already done, but when the music stems became available, I jumped at the chance to go one better!
Wild Cherry began recording for the WC label in 1970 with "You Can Be High (But Lay Low) a local hit. They released two more singles, "Something Special On Your Mind" in 1971 and then in 1972 "Get Down" for the same label.
Later on in 1972, a label switch to Brown Bag Records resulted in one more single "Show Me Your Badge". A&M Records signed the band for a one off single, "Voodoo Doll" which did not chart.
Rob Parissi broke up the band, then reformed it a few years later to play gigs in dance clubs. One night a bar patron yelled out that they should "Play that funky music" and inspired by the disco beat, Parissi tried to work in rock and roll elements to the song and came up with a funky pop rock classic, "Play That Funky Music" in 1976. This time they signed with Epic Records and the funky rock beat sped them right to the top of the Hot100 and created a dance classic.
They were never able to recreate the magic of "Play That Funky Music" and by 1979 were overshadowed by the genre they helped to create and faded away leaving us this marvelously tasty funk tune that never fails to get those tail feathers shakin'!
